Eel River Organics embraces an entirely natural way of growing marijuana. While other commercial cannabis plants are subjected to artificial light and chemical fertilizers, its seeds are nourished by the raw elements of nature.
Q&A with Entrepreneur & EEL River Organics
What do you think are the biggest misconceptions cannabis industry?
Much of the market, including many growers, believes that the highest quality cannabis products can only be grown in artificial, indoor environments. The methods of cultivation that evolved during prohibition were as much driven by avoiding detection as generating as much product as possible in a small space. These methods may produce beautiful flower, but the approach is neither sustainable or good for the environment. We believe great cannabis can be farmed like any nutrient-rich agricultural product: sustainably, organically, and even dry-farmed with no irrigation!
How is your business innovating?
We are ignoring current conventions in cannabis cultivation and manufacturing. First, we dry-farm, which means we use no irrigation. Our approach has less impact on the environment than commercial farming or any other crop. Period. Our approach also has the benefit of encouraging the plant to over express its essential oils, including cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes, producing subtle and unique flavors.
What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome in your business?
The biggest hurdle in our business to overcome has been navigating the complex local and state permitting process during this the transition period under California’s medical marijuana laws passed in November of 2015. We are focused on developing and operating a transparent business that embraces the regulated industry. That is particularly difficult as laws and regulations have been changed and updated on frequent basis since we began this journey.
What is your favorite aspect of working in this industry?
Even though this industry has been around a very long time, we are in an exciting time. We are essentially participating in the birth of a new industry that promises to be one of the next great booms. This creates the challenges and potential rewards to get entrepreneurs excited. We’ve only seen the beginnings of innovations in products, delivery platforms, and ancillary industries, and we look forward to participating in that innovation.
What inspires you?
We are inspired by the men and women in pediatric oncology that are quietly, but tirelessly working to find cures for this disease that afflict too many innocent children and their families. We’ve been honored to support the work of some of the most brilliant minds that are making a real difference in this fight. In business, we are inspired by people that have the intelligence to solve real problems, the passion to create products that people love, and tenacity to apply themselves to make a difference.
