Q&A with Entrepreneur & Greenbroz
What do you think are the biggest misconceptions cannabis industry?
A large misconception is that it is an industry run by people whose primary focus is getting high and that it mimics what you see in the culture magazines, but that’s not the case at all. It is a burgeoning, budding, and growing industry that has had all the same problems as any other industry has ever had with automation, mechanizing and process. It’s very difficult to grow consistent product, of any type, at scale. A lot of this innovative design is being worked out in real time since cannabis has very specific requirements.
How is your business innovating?
What we’re doing, as far as innovation, is pushing forward with creating tools that address the industry’s specific needs. There are plenty of automated tools in other industries but cannabis has a unique need for gentle handling. GreenBroz is focused on creating gentle, quick, and quiet machines specific to the cannabis industry. What we strive for is to offer solutions to attain the success they desire. Our challenge as an engineering company is to design products with the ability to scale up production, without sacrificing quality.
What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome in your business?
The biggest hurdle is not being treated like a legitimate business by the banks. The whole industry has this problem. We have to use investment capital because we don’t have access to normal capital. We must be mindful that the investors we partner with are of like mind and share the same values. You need to know the people who get involved with your business and make sure they are investors who believe in your dreams and visions, or you have to be willing to give up your dreams and visions.
What is your favorite aspect of working in this industry?
It is one of the most challenging and exciting times in this space. Everyone is excited and the energy is absolutely electric. We work with cultivators that are helping to blaze this new trail; they are making their own "American Dream" a reality whether or not they are operating a modest size farm or a 20-acre facility. There is a massive difference in size and scale of one operation to the next but they all have the same enthusiasm, drive, and dreams as one another. Getting to know them and helping them realize their own success--that’s something we love.
What inspires you?
Much of our inspiration goes back to my family and the family business we had. We lost our business because we were indebted due to very expensive equipment. It was equipment we needed to compete but ultimately it led to the demise of the business. That inspires us to make the best equipment possible. We have a market that we need to serve and care for. Our ultimate goal is to make our clients successful. We are driven to succeed so that we can help drive the success of our growers. To make machines of success? That's inspiration right there!
