Q&A with Entrepreneur & Sana Packaging
What do you think are the biggest misconceptions cannabis industry?
As legalization continues to spread, some people are quick to forget that at its core cannabis is a social and environmental justice movement. The people getting into cannabis to make a quick buck aren’t helping anyone. We can’t forget our roots in the “back to the land” movement of the 1970s and we can’t forget all the people and communities that suffered--and continue to suffer--because of our government’s “war on drugs.”
How is your business innovating?
There’s a lack of sustainable packaging solutions in the cannabis industry. This is primarily due to strict cannabis packaging regulations that make it difficult to innovate. We started as disgruntled consumers. We were sick of all the plastic cannabis packaging piling up in our apartments. Now, we’re the first company in the world to mass-produce 100 percent plant-based hemp plastic cannabis packaging. We’re also supporting the domestic hemp industry, which has the potential to reinvigorate economically stifled agricultural communities all across the country. Lastly, we’re helping to change the way people think about sustainability, disposable products, and waste recovery.
What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome in your business?
Our founders started working on Sana Packaging for a class project in their MBA program at CU Boulder. That was two years ago. Since then, we completed the CanopyBoulder accelerator program and designed, developed, and launched our first two products--the Sana Tube and the Sana Container. Our advisors told us countless times that few things are more difficult for entrepreneurs than surviving their first product launch. They weren’t kidding! We're extremely proud of our team and everything we’ve accomplished thus far.
What is your favorite aspect of working in this industry?
We love working in industries that are young and open to change. As rapidly growing and emerging industries, the cannabis and industrial hemp industries are new platforms for positive economic, social, and environmental change. At Sana Packaging, we are using these platforms to speak up and help change the way we think about sustainability, disposable products, and waste recovery.
What inspires you?
We're inspired by our peers in the cannabis and industrial hemp industries. We're also inspired by the plants themselves--cannabis and hemp have so many incredible uses and properties, many of which we’ve barely scratched the surface of.
