Q&A with Entrepreneur & Van Der Pop
What do you think are the biggest misconceptions cannabis industry?
We often see missed opportunities in popular media to convey a more realistic, respectable cannabis consumer. A serious professional who pokes fun at our chosen profession is remiss in promoting dated stoner stereotypes. Unfortunately, this basic misconception continues to challenge our profession.
How is your business innovating?
When Van der Pop was founded, very few brands catered to female cannabis consumers. Today, 2-1/2 years later, the landscape has completely changed. There are exponentially more brands, relevant content, and stylish products that speak to cannabis' role in the health and happiness of the modern woman. We are proud Van der Pop represents the current shift in advocacy from legalization to normalization. We were first to recognize and respond to stigma's part in precluding women from embracing cannabis as a normal lifestyle choice. We know stigma is bad for business and others are catching on/up.
What was the biggest hurdle you had to overcome in your business?
As a female-run business, we accepted the dismal reality associated with fundraising. As a female-run cannabis business, we knew acceptance looked a lot like compromise. Specifically, selling Van der Pop so that it had its best and brightest future. (Spoiler: mission accomplished!)
What is your favorite aspect of working in this industry?
The many women who collaborate with us and dream big!
What inspires you?
The increase in consumer education creates less resistance for new market opportunities that serve an increasingly more diverse demographic. These relative micro trends collectively influence the industry's democratization and, thus, normalization. Cannabis has the potential to create a paradigm shift in how we connect with others and our natural world. Our hope is that as more people responsibly incorporate the plant into their lives, more acceptance, appreciation and awe will weave through our communities. The potential this can have on future generations inspires us everyday.
